 Use in Herbal Medicine

Ginseng has a sweetly aromatic flavour. Its root has long been regarded by the Chinese as a panacea for illness, though it was usually used by them in a prophylactic (preventive) rather than a curative manner. Pharmacologically, ginseng is nonspecific in its effects and is capable of a normalizing action irrespective of the pathological situation. Ginseng’s effects include improved mental performance, learning, and memory and sensory awareness. The basis of ginseng’s action is believed to be due to certain chemical agents in it that increase the brain’s adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) activity without involving the adrenal glands. A generalized mental arousal is thereby effected.

Korean ginseng is usually made into a powdered form or capsule form from the dry root and taken by mouth as a supplement. Although there is a tincture (a liquid preparation made with alcohol) and tea form available, most of the clinical research studies are performed using ginseng in the powdered/supplement form.

Korean Ginseng has been used for improving overall health. It has also been used to strengthen the immune system and help fight off stress and disease and often called energy capsule. There are different types of ginseng. Asian ginseng (from Chinese and Korean sources) has been used for unclear thinking, diabetes, and male erectile dysfunction. American ginseng has been used for diabetes and for reducing the risk of the common cold and flu. Siberian ginseng has been used for reducing the risk of colds and flu, and for reducing the severity of herpes simplex virus type 2 infections.
